lynmouth cliff railway print

Description

This lovely Lynmouth cliff railway print is a perfect reminder of this charming north Devon village.

It shows the Lynton and Lynmouth cliff railway which has connected these two villages since it opened in Easter 1890. A ride in one of the elegant carriages on this funicular railway offers fantastic views along the coast and can feel like a journey back to a golden age of engineering. One of only three completely water powered railways in the world, this Devon cliff railway is the steepest and the highest climbing some 500 feet.

The village of Lynmouth suffered severe damage one night in august 1952 when the river Lyn burst its banks after a deluge of rain. A raging torrent cut through the village destroying over a hundred buildings and claiming the lives of 34 people. A small memorial hall pays tribute.

A matching mug will be available soon.
